What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is the treatment of disability that arises from disease or injury. Treatments are carried out by the use of hot or cold therapies, water, light, electricity, ultrasound, massage and/or mobilization of tissues. These treatments are carried out under the supervision of a medical doctor who diagnoses the condition, and recommends physical therapy for the patient.
The objective of PT treatments is to restore normal functional ability to the patient's body. To do this, the therapist needs to:

  • Restore range of motion, strength, endurance and coordination
  • Decrease pain, spasm, swelling, and gait (walking) deviations
  • Promote healing, independence with walking, and ability to transfer to different positions
  • Correct postural deviations
  • Instruct in clear home exercise programs for the patient to follow

Today, physical therapy is a widely recognized medical profession. It has roots dating back to ancient Rome and Greece, where people were treated with warm water baths, or massage and corrective exercises. The tools used by Physical Therapists today are similar, but have evolved with modern medical technology, to provide the best possible care for you, the patient.
